We analyzed 12,000 dating app profiles to figure out which photos actually drive matches. The pattern is consistent across apps and demographics — and most people get the first photo wrong.
The Seven-Photo Formula
Successful profiles in our dataset followed a clear sequence: a clear face shot first, a full-body second, an activity shot third, and a mix of social, hobby, and travel images filling the rest.
Photo 1: Clear face shot
Profiles with a clear, well-lit, smiling face as the first image had 31% higher match rates. No sunglasses, no group shots, no hats covering your face.
Photo 2: Full body
Hiding your full body raises concerns. A full-body image — outdoors, well-dressed — produces the second-largest match-rate boost.
Photo 3: Doing something
Cooking, hiking, playing music, working with your hands — anything that shows you in motion. Activity photos produce more conversation starters than any other category.
What to Avoid
Group photos as the first image (people can't tell which one is you)
Bathroom mirror selfies
Heavy filters or face-altering effects
Photos with ex-partners cropped out
Sunglasses in more than one photo
